Mail/News/Web Setting | Computing Services | CSE Department at the OSU
Mail, News,
and Web Settings
- E-mail Setup - The CSE Dept. uses username@cse.ohio-state.edu as the
standard form of e-mail address. If you would rather forward your e-mail to your
Ohio State e-mail (lastname.##@osu.edu), simply create a file called .forward in
your unix home directory. In this .forward file, type the e-mail address you wish
to have your CSE e-mail forwarded to and save the file. Your e-mail will then be
forwarded to the address you specified
- Spam - The CSE Dept. has a spam and virus protection device named
"the barracuda" installed that will quarantine mail before it arrives in your
inbox if it looks like spam or contains a virus. You will receive a daily e-mail
from the barracuda with a list of e-mail that it blocked. If you wish to retrieve
any of the blocked messages, you can follow a link in the barracuda e-mail. You
are also able to configure the settings the barracuda uses to determine if mail
sent to your account is spam.
- Newsgroups - You can use any news reader you like to browse the CSE
newsgroups. The news server is named news.cse.ohio-state.edu.
- Remote Access - There are many ways to connect to the CSE environment
from a remote location. Different levels of access are available for students
and faculty.
* Faculty, Staff, and Grad Students - Use RDP to connect to your office PC from
a remote location. RDP is a standard program in Windows XP. It is located in
Start -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop
Connection. When you run RDP from a remote computer, simply start up the program
and enter the fully qualified domain name of your PC (i.e. pc-dlxxx.cse.ohio-state.edu)
in the box and click "Connect". You will then be able to login to your PC at work
and the display will appear on your PC at home.
NEW: Faculty members now have access through RDP to an emergency PC in case they
are unable to connect to the PC on their desktop remotely. The address to this
emergency PC is facultypc.cse.ohio-state.edu
* Undergrads - Remote connection to Windows is not possible. However, you may connect
to the stdsun UNIX servers remotely by using ssh, Xwin32, or eXceed.
If you have any problems logging in remotely, please contact the Help Desk at 292-6542.
- Web Pages - Faculty, Staff, and Students can create their own web pages
and have them hosted on the CSE servers. Your account is created with a folder
called WWW in your home directory on UNIX. Set the permissions so the web server can read the directory chmod 755 WWW. To setup your web page, create a file
in your WWW directory called index.html and use that for the front page of your
website. Make sure that the permissions are set so that your index.html file is
world readable. If in doubt, use the command chmod 644 index.html while
in your WWW directory to set the permissions. Once you have created the index.html
file with the correct permissions, you can view your website at
http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~username
