- Checking Print Queues - You can check the queue on a particular printer
in UNIX If you know the printer name. The command to check the print queue is
lpq -P printername
Using a printer in Caldwell 112 as an example...
% lpq -P lj_cl_112_a
Printer: lj_cl_112_a@cowboy 'cl112a'
Queue: 1 printable job
Server: pid 18769 active
Unspooler: pid 18770 active
Status: IF filter 'ifhp' filter finished at 14:34:49.542
Filter_status: (of) getting end using 'pjl job/eoj' at 14:34:49.564
Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size Time
active cardoza@cowboy+768 A 768 smbprn.008509.XIaqO 282203 14:33:58
The last line(s) of output from the command is the print queue. Currently, there is
one job in the print queue from user "cardoza," and the word "active" in front that means
the printer is printing the document. If it said "stalled" instead of "active," there
was a problem printing the document, and an Operator will likely need to manually
remove the job. Please contact the Help Desk at 2-6542 if a stalled job needs to
be removed from the queue.
- Printer Paper - The Help Desk fills up the printers with paper twice
each day. However, it is still possible that a printer may run out of paper before
an Operator has performed a scheduled refill. If you notice a printer out of paper,
please contact the Help Desk at 292-6542 and an Operator will refill the
printer right away.
- Printer Toner - If you notice the print quality of your printouts
degrading, please let the Help Desk know right away. Normally, an Operator will
gently "shake" the cartridge to redistribute the toner left inside the cartridge.
This should yield another 1000 or so pages of good quality printouts. After that,
toner will be replaced by an Operator.
- Print Quota - Each account has a print quota associated with it, which
is the number of pages you are allowed to print on the CSE printers. You can look
up your print quota and how much you have remaining by typing print-quota
at a UNIX prompt. Print quotas for different types of accounts are listed below.
CSE 100, CSE 101, CSE 200: 50 pages
CSE Non-Major Students: 500 pages
CSE Major Students: 1000 pages
CSE Grad Students: 1500 pages
CSE Staff: unlimited
CSE Faculty: unlimited
If you run out of quota, you may purchase more quota by purchasing the Department
a new toner cartridge for one of our printers. If you would like to pursue this
option, please contact the Help Desk for instructions on the type of cartridge to
purchase.
- Color Printer Access - Access to the Color Printers is restricted
to CSE Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students.
