Co-ops / Internships / Jobs

Students are strongly encouraged to look for co-op and internship opportunities and take advantage of them. Co-op and internship experiences can be valuable in establishing industry-contacts that can of great help when looking for post-graduation employment.

The Career Services offices in the College of Engineering and in the College of Arts and Sciences provide valuable services to help students looking for co-op/internship opportunities as well as for permanent employment opportunities. These offices organize career fairs as well as on-campus interviews with recruiters from a variety of companies and organizations. The offices also offer a variety of workshops and individual appointments to help with such items as interviewing skills, resume writing, etc. (Details about the workshops that Engineering Career Services conducts are available on-line.) Both career service offices require students to register with them. While some of their services are available without registration others, such as signing up for on-campus interviews, are available only to students who register. Students are strongly encouraged to register with the Career Services offices early in their academic career, rather than waiting until the senior year.

One important problem that BS CIS/BA CIS majors face is that many employers, looking for Computer Science majors, work exclusively with the Engineering Career Services (ECS). Because of this, we have been trying to persuade ECS to allow CIS majors to have access to their services; we hope in the near future that we will succeed in these efforts and that ECS will allow CIS majors access to their services.
