Minor in Computer Science
This program was recently revised to make it more flexible. If you were already following the earlier program, that should still meet the requirements of this more flexible program. If you have any questions, please consult with one of the advisors in the Advising Office.
Students who plan to major in another area but have a strong interest in computing may want to consider doing a Minor in Computer and Information Science (CIS).
A student minoring in CIS must follow one of the following two tracks. Courses applied to the minor may not be applied toward the student's major.
- Programming and Algorithms Track:
- Required Courses
- CSE 201 or 202; 221; 222; 321;
Math 345 or 366. - Elective Courses (select a minimum of two)
- The following courses are recommended:
CSE 360, 541, 551, 560, 581, 621, 625, 630, 651, 670, 671, 675.01 or 675.02, 677, 680.
You may choose other courses with approval of the Advising Office.
- Information Systems Track:
- Required Courses
- CSE 200, 201, 214, 670;
Math 345 or 366. - Elective Courses (select a minimum of two)
- The following courses are recommended:
CSE 314, 551, 616, 671.
You may choose other courses with approval of the Advising Office.
Students pursuing a minor do not get permanent computer accounts on the departmental machines, nor do they get priority scheduling in CSE courses.
The following guidelines apply to all minor programs, including the CIS minor program, in the College of Arts and Sciences. If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact ASC (see useful links page for contact information).
- Required for graduation: No
- Credit hours required: 25 hrs (min).
- Transfer credits allowed: Maximum of 10 hrs.
- Overlap with GEC: Permitted.
- Overlap with major: Not allowed; and the minor must be in a different subject than the major; the same courses cannot count on the minor and on the major.
- Grades required: Minimum of C- for a course to be listed in the minor; minimum of 2.0 cphr required for the minor; courses graded as Pass/Non-pass cannot count on the minor.
- Approval required: No approval needed except as indicated above.
- Filing the minor program form: Must be filed at least by the time the graduation application is submitted to a college or school counselor.
- Changes in the minor: Any variations from the minor program described above must be approved by the CSE Dept.
