Checking Print Queues

Users may check the queue for any CSE printer from the Linux environment with the command lpq -P <printername>. The example below check the print queue for printer A in CL112.

%lpq -P lj_cl_112_a
Printer: lj_cl_112_a@guteberg 'cl112a'
Queue: 1 printable job
Server: pid 18769 active
Unspooler: pid 18770 active
Status: IF filter 'ifhp' filter finished at 14:34:49.542
Filter_status: (of getting end using 'pjl job/eoj' at 14:34:49.564
Rank Owener/ID Class Job Files Size Time active user@gutenberg+768 A 768 smbprn.008509.XlaqO 282203 14:33:58

The last line(s) of output from the command is a list of jobs currently in the print queue. The word active at the beginning of the line indicates the job currently printing. If the first word on the line is stalled instead of active, there may have been a problem printing the document. Please contact the Help Desk for assistance removing the job from the queue.

Canceling Print Jobs

Users may cancel their own print jobs with the command cancel <job_id>. The Job ID can be found in the output of lpq, in the fourth column.

Paper & Toner

Paper and toner levels for all printers are monitored by the Help Desk during regular hours, and will be replenished as necessary. If a printer runs out of paper or toner and is not replenished within 15–30 minutes, please contact the Help Desk.

Print Quotas

Print quotas are assigned to each account based on the type of account, and are reset each semester. Detailed information on quotas is available here.

Printer Etiquette

Remember that each user's output is considered private. Do not handle another person's output more than necessary. Each print job can be identified by it's banner page.

Remember that printing uses valuable resources. Please make every effort to minimize the number of pages printed, and always check the contents of the file before you print it.
