Data Mining And Machine Learning Inside Bosch

Over the last decade, large internet companies have demonstrated tremendous value in applying machine learning algorithms to their data.  These same companies have invented 'big-data' technologies that now enable economical storage and processing of vast amounts of data.  This has led to a current trend in large enterprises to apply data mining and machine learning techniques to their own business data.  In this talk I will give a ground level view of these efforts inside Bosch.  Bosch is a leading global supplier of technology and services. From appliances to automated driving, direct injection to drives and controls, packaging machines to power tools, sensors to security systems, telehealth to thermotechnology, Bosch develops a wide range of solutions that are “Invented for life.“  Due to this diversity and scale, data mining inside Bosch is both exciting and challenging.  I will share several examples from recent projects that illustrate this point. I will also discuss the skills we look for when hiring new data scientists.

Jeff Thompson received his Ph.D. in Vision Science from UC Berkeley in 2005 and was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University's Center for Biomedical Imaging.  In recent years, Jeff has worked as a data scientist in both large corporations and small startups.  He is currently a senior engineer with the data mining services team at Robert Bosch LLC in Palo Alto, CA, where he applies machine learning and big-data technologies to make Bosch products better.
