Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Professor John Paparrizos has focused his career on developing the next generation of data-intensive and machine-learning technologies. Recognizing the impact and potential of his work, the IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Committee on Data Engineering recently honored him with its TCDE Rising Star Award for "breakthroughs in time series data management, as well as contributions to adaptive methodologies for data intensive and machine learning applications."

Dr. John Paparizzos

The IEEE TCDE Rising Star Award is based on an individual's whole body of work in the first five years after the Ph.D. The award aims to promote current database researchers as they create their career.

Director of the Data Analytics, Understanding, Mining, and Management (DATUM) Lab, Paparrizos started at Ohio State in September 2022. His research in databases, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence focuses on adaptive solutions for managing and analyzing structured and unstructured data, such as relational, time-series, multimedia, text, graphs, web and IoT data. Prior to Ohio State, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago.

Paparrizos’ research has earned multiple accolades. Specifically, his doctoral work on time-series analytics was recognized at the 2019 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) SIGKDD Doctoral Dissertation Award competition. While a postdoc, he won the NetApp Faculty Award, which recognizes faculty of all levels "pursuing cutting‑edge research in data management." He also won the inaugural ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award. His work has been featured in popular media outlets, including the Washington Post, Fortune, MIT Technology Review, and on the front page of the New York Times.

Paparrizos received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, his M.S. from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and his B.S. from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He held internships or visiting positions at Microsoft Research, Yahoo! Labs, Logitech, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Université Paris Cité.
